Arrival Times:
|
Please plan on being dressed and on the mat at least 10 minutes before class starts. This should be what is happening every class.
If you can’t seem to get to class on time, leave a little earlier. If class starts at 9am. This means you should be on the mat and stretching by 8:45. Better to be early than late. |
2. Bathroom/water breaks: |
A new policy is being instituted. If you need to use the bathroom, or get a drink of water during class.
1. Bow to your partner and go sit in seiza over by the door (under the attendance card box.) 2. Wait until Sensei notices you and gives you permission to leave the dojo. 3. QUICKLY get your drink of water or use the bathroom (remember your partner is all alone and wants to train, not stand.) a. This should not be a leisurely stroll to the bathroom, it should be a brisk jog at the least. b. If you are uke for the person leaving, you should find another person or group to work in with while the person is away. 4. Return to the dojo and sit in seiza under the announcement board until Sensei notices you and gives you permission to return to class. |
3. Breaks if you are exhausted/overheated:
|
It is starting to get hot out. Please be sure you are hydrating well before class as it helps a lot. This means drinking water ALL day prior to class. A glass of water right before class doesn’t do anything.
If you feel light-headed, weak, blurred vision, or if you stop sweating, it is ok to stop training. We all need to look out for each other and the signs of heat stroke/exhaustion (not sweating, very red, incoherent, etc) If you do need to take a break due to heat or exhaustion please do the following. 1. Bow to your partner and explain the situation. This is both courtesy and making sure someone knows you’re in distress. a. Uke should join another person or group. 2. Go and sit in seiza by the door (under the attendance card box.) a. Sitting outside on the benches to cool off is no longer acceptable unless permission is given by Sensei. b. You can learn a lot by watching class. Sit quietly in the corner and observe while you cool down. Once you are ready to return to class, politely get the attention of sensei and join back in. |
General Etiquette:
|
1. Talking during class should be kept to a minimum. This talking takes many forms:
a. Idle “chatter” There should not be any during class. Save it for before or after class. b. Questions for Sensei A student's “job” during class is to follow the instruction from Sensei. If you are confused about “how” to do a technique, you should work with your partner first to better understand it. If you and your partner are still confused on the technique, it is ok to ask Sensei for clarification as he/she comes around. Raise your hand for help if you are really stuck. Class is not the time to discuss the efficacy of the technique such as discussions around “if it works in real life.” 2. Seated position during rest or instruction. Two options: Seiza or cross legged. If you are uncomfortable in seiza it is ok to sit crosslegged.
